I've moved! New home! Go visit!

I've moved my blog, for various reasons.

My new page is: http://ltf.blogcadia.com/

The rest of this post is mostly mirror of the first post on my new site... update your bookmarks (all four of you). :)

Why am I moving?

I've been using a standard Nucleus CMS version on this site, rather than the Multi-Domain Nucleus that I've been working on and having lots of people test for me. It's been a pain maintaining two databases, I get a ton of spam on this site, I don't like the layout anymore, and I should eat my own dinner so to speak.

I'm sick of the comment spam, so I've shut down comments on this site. The old posts will hang around for posterity though.

See you at the new site!

If I had the money...

John, Justin, and maybe Kailin (if she wanted) would each have one of these:

Luke's lightsaber from Star Wars Episode II

Of course, if I had the money, I would have one of these!

"Official reproduction of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Enhanced glowing blue blade with realistic power-up and power-down light effects...

Features five motion sensor controlled sound effects digitally recorded from the movie...

Durable metal hilt looks and feels like a real lightsaber."

(I know, John, you'd prefer the Anakin or Vader version... wouldn't you!)

Sadly they aren't the real thing, especially since the real ones have so many cool uses:

Using Your Lightsaber Around the Home

Handy indeed!

Bad timing

Okay, I'll stop putting these up soon. But this one made me laugh so hard I had to put it up.
Rabidplaybunny87: Okay, so my neighbors officially hate me

GarbageStan23: why?

Rabidplaybunny87: Well, me, david and andrew were having a bonfire in the backyard, and we were making s'mores and all... and suddenly we here sirens, and see a firetruck turn into the street in front of us.

Rabidplaybunny87: So we all went running to see what was up, and our neigbor's house was on fire!

GarbageStan23: oh s__t!

Rabidplaybunny87: Yeah, and when we got there, the wife was crying into her husbands arms, and we were just kinda standing there, and then she saw us, and then like for 10 seconds, gave us the dirtiest look ever

Rabidplaybunny87: Turns out, we were still holding our sticks with marshmallows on it, watching the fire....

Rabidplaybunny87: talk about bad timing...

You're such a great friend

Been there, done that.
A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you're a great guy, but I don't like you in that way.

This is roughly the equivalent for the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but we're not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the basis for comparison for all other applicants.

But, we're going to hire somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if he doesn't work out, we'll hire somebody else, but still not you. In fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to complain about the person that we hired.

Bash.org's quote database, quote #492775:

Heres the history of our medicine.

"I have a sore throat."
2000 BC : "eat this root"
1200 AD : "That root is heathen, say this prayer."
1500 AD : "That prayer is superstition, drink this elixir."
1800 AD : "That elixir is snake oil, Take this pill."
1900 AD : "That pill is ineffective, Take this antibiotic."
2000 AD : "That antibiotic is artificial, Here why dont you eat this root."

Serenity trailer released

Thanks to an early-morning tip from Slashdot, I checked out the new Serentity movie trailer this morning.

Not much to say about this one... it looks great, and is completely unnecessary in terms of getting me to see the movie. It's aim of course is to get people who aren't already Firefly fans to come out.

Here's part of the scoop Joss posted on the official site (free reg required, must give them your name, birth date, first born child, etc.):

Now, here's a word of warning: this trailer ain't shy. If you're looking to live totally spoiler-free, know that there's plenty of key dialogue and images running through this bad boy. It's pretty tasty, though, and it doesn't give everything away. But close scrutiny will definitely learn you much of what's to come. (Anakin TOTALLY goes evil.) It's a nice piece to while away the time till September, and hopefully should intrigue th' peeps that don't have coats of brown.

Intrigue the peeps enough, and we might see more movies and (dare I say it?) a return to TV...?

UPDATE: I guess a link would be nice. Duh. -> Link

Misc.

Got out and visited with the neighbors for a few minutes tonight. Reilly isn?t very social yet, but he does interact a bit with other kids. And they sure seem to like him.

My neighbor is going to have a baby (her 4th - # 3 isn?t 2 yet). They only had one when they moved here. And our old neighbor who moved elsewhere in the country is having her 4th too. They were here for #?s 2 and 3.

At some point, perhaps we?ll have #2. We?d sure like that.

I?m thinking of doing some audio blogging, with a newsy sort of a twist. I would like to do a format somewhat like NPR?s All Things Considered but not quite so ambitious - a small time version. Maybe one or two stories a month to start out.

I haven?t spent much time looking for ideas just yet. Can any of you help me out in that regard? I?m not interested in talking about top news or anything like that. I?m thinking somewhat offbeat but nonetheless interesting. Or maybe some top news, but from some different perspective.

Weekend, cooking ahead, Reilly, not quite 42, waffle cups

Okay, it's a new week. Let's try this again! Posting more than once a month, that is.

It's been some weekend. Saturday was busy... I made seven servings of spaghetti sauce (which seemed to possibly not be good for Maren... gotta check those ingredients I guess), eight servings of "mexi-chicken" whatever that is. No corn in it... what kind of Mexican has no corn in it? Smells good though. Oh, and I took some leftover Chicken Tikka Masala (from a mix... didn't turn out that great) and turned it into Chicken Tikka Masala soup with rice. (Curry once, curry twice...) And pizza burgers. Tasty.

Reilly was sick today - throwing up and everthing. Sad little boy. Bounced back quickly after a short nap though.

Sadly, it looks as though the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie may be a big let-down for fans of the book - from Slashdot: Hitchhiker's Movie is Bad, says Adams Biographer:
MJ Simpson, who has 'been studying and documenting the life and career of Douglas Adams for more than 20 years', has written a very in-depth review and plot analysis of the Hitchhiker's movie. As well as the full review that contains SPOILERS, he has also published a shortened spoiler-free version, as well as a list of things from the radio plays, records, books and TV series that have not been included in the movie. Hitchhiker's fans, prepare to be like Marvin ... very depressed.
I read most of the full review, and I'm not sure I'm going to spend ten bucks to see the movie. Maybe on video. It's really not a big-screen must-see like Star Wars or LOTR.

Cleaned the kitchen island and left the sink shiny. Day 1 of 28... 27 more to go and we score some Brusters!

Fatwa Issued Against Bin Laden

Instapundit noted this as a "Heh" yesterday, and I thought the link would lead to Srappleface.

Even better... it's for real. The Islamic Commission of Spain [corrected from "Spanish Islamic Cleric", mea culpa] issued the Fatwa which said that, among other things, bin Laden is an apostate. (I wonder if he can be ex-communicated?) :)

The link is to California Yankee who quotes the article, and has this to add:
American Muslims would have made a lot of points in the U.S., and helped the War Against Terrorism, had they done something like this after 9-11.
Sad to say, this does hurt the credibility of American Muslims.

UPDATE: LGF notes something that the AP article left out:
The Commission has also drawn up a document designed to ?thank the Spanish people and the government for their attitude towards Muslims? since last March 11, in particular for not taking ?disproportionate? measures similar to those which the Sept 11 attacks sparked in the US.
I don't know (literally) if that's equivalent to thanking Spain for "caving in after the Madrid train bombings" as Charles suggests. But I wonder what else the Commission has been saying lately?

My point still stands though, this doesn't reflect well on the Islamic organizations in America, or its members who don't seem to be calling for such a rebuke either.

What to write about

Maren asked me tonight, "Why don't you post more often?"

I paused for a moment and said, "I really don't know. I guess I don't know what to put up." We talked about how these can be like journals and be something for our children and theirs (should these sites last so long) to read. Heaven forbid, I think, that anyone should get to know me through this site, wherein the subtitle used to be "random silly links something-or-other rampant sleep loss" or something to that effect.

I'm working every night on getting the new server running for the blogs. I've put an update post on the Blogcadia main page, if you're interested. (Be interested... go look!) :)

Just realized

I need to update the skin on this site. One of the links is dead - Quaddamage.net 'closed' and no one hangs out there any more. Plus I should add links to all of the family blogs!

I hardly ever post, much to the chagrin of said family. After having gone so long with so few readers, I got out of the habit. Now many of my in-laws are regular blogsurfers and bloggers and they're wondering why I don't post very often. I guess I just don't make the time. But I am trying to get back out here more often.

Honestly I have more fun getting blogs set up for other folks. The Blogcadia site is getting some limited yet positive word of mouth, and there are several people I know who would like to get set up. So I am now spending time every day getting it ready.

So you know, the site has a front page and I will be putting news up there as I add, fix, and prepare features for the system for more widespread usage.

http://blogcadia.com

I'll keep that up to date as the system develops.

Weird day

I've been kind of high-energy all day and I'm in a silly mood at this point. To give you an idea:

(Background: we give our machines coded names like "wm3dkrn16h7". That's so you can look at the name and know what OS it is, where it is, etc.)

I just got this email from one of my co-workers:
Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2005 4:40 PM
Subject: SSH server

Jeff,

What is the name of your SSH windows server???

Thanks
My reply:
I like to call her "Vera".

Jeff
The more humorless the co-worker, the more fun I have on days like these.

Well, not really. This place is too uptight and I chickened out. Sure was a fun thought though. *sigh* :/

A blog for ya

The official Serenity movie site had a blog, with posts from Joss and Nathan Fillion, and other folks working on the movie. No one has posted since Joss' wrap-up post back in September. But it's fun to read:
Joss is the master at blending genres. If you don't think that Barbara Streisand bludgeoning Mal with a compressor coil, stepping over his bloody corpse and bursting into "You don't bring me flowers," all within the first ten minutes of the movie, will be believable AND further the plot, urine for a treat.
Go check it out.

For the uninitiated: (1) Serenity is a movie treatment of the fantabulous yet short-lived Firefly TV show; and (2) Go get initiated, it's a fun show and great science fiction. (Note that there are a couple R-rated moments in the DVD version.)

6. Tchotchkys from Microsoft
7. This intar-web thingy
8. The gospel, and the hope that someday I will understand it enough to put it to work in my life well
9. One-digit numbers. Sorry, 10.

Have a good weekend, all!
